Trash Campaign Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I participate in the Trash Challenge?

A: Welcome! The Trash challenge is all about raising awareness of the issue of trash in our local environments. There are many ways you can get involved as long as positive change through action is the main element. Taking a photo of a situation involving trash and advocating for change, showing changes you have made in your life to be more sustainable, or doing a clean up while on a walk with your family, all are great examples of ways you can participate. We encourage you to have a little blurb in your caption explaining why you’re participating in the EarthHub trash challenge, and why it matters to you!  If you are more technology inclined then doing a video is a great way to get involved! Record yourself taking part in a trash clean up in your local environment by following our template. In our Production Template, we explain how to construct your video, and what to include as you film.  Post your content on Instagram and/or YouTube with the hashtag #earthhubtrashchallenge.

Don’t forget to challenge some of your friends!

Q: What do I do if I have been Challenged?

A: A challenge is an invitation to learn more about the issue of trash and to create your own educational content! If you decide you want to do so then read this FAQ and check out our template.  For more instructions refer to the previous question.

Q: What precautions do I need to take to do this?

A: Picking up trash can be hazardous, to do so you should take proper precautions. Consider bringing multiple bags and multiple gloves. We also acknowledge that not everyone can take part in a pick-up at the moment bc of the pandemic. We encourage people to prioritize their safety first in all situations, and if you can fit a little pick up in your errands or whatever safe time outside then please be safe in doing so. Those who do not feel safe in doing so can also contribute by sharing our videos and or posting about ways you and others can reduce the trash you create.

Q: What if I feel uncomfortable taking a video?

A: No worries at all! Bringing attention to the problem of trash is the main goal behind this challenge, photos and captions that highlight those issues all help raise awareness! Look back at the first question for some more ideas of ways you can participate.

Q: Where should I pick up trash?

A: Do you live near any parks? How about a beach? Popular hiking trails? Parking lots? Town centres? We can almost guarantee you’ll find trash any and everywhere. You can start not necessarily by picking up trash, but simply opening your eyes and being cognizant of the trash around whenever you’re outside. Take mental notes of where you see trash, and then you’ll gain an idea of where to start picking it up!

Q: How long do I have to pick trash up for?

A: This is entirely up to you. We’re happy that you’re even thinking about it! Picking up even one piece of trash is taking action. One of our EarthHub members recently went to pick up trash at a beach near his hometown. He managed to fill an entire trash bag in only 20 MINUTES! It doesn’t take much time. If all you have is 1 hour or even 5 minutes, you can still make a difference.

Q: What do I do with my trash after I pick it up?

A: There are multiple ways to go about this, but you ultimately want to separate like and like, and bring the organized trash to a dump for proper disposal. You may have to research or contact your local trash resources. To make it easier you can use multiple bags for categorizing trash: recyclable waste, liquid or solid waste, medicinal/clinical waste, etc.

When handling trash make sure you do so safely. Wear protective gloves and a mask if available.

Q: Who do I challenge?

A: Anyone and everyone! Social media is an unending network of connections. Challenge friends, family, celebrities, anyone you can possibly think of!

Q: What Next?

A: Trash is a multi-faceted issue while cleaning up litter and protecting our shared spaces is a huge battle with trash there is more you can do. Recycling and clean-ups are just the start, reducing and reusing the things we bring into our lives are also major ways we can slow the flow of trash into our communities.

We encourage everyone to learn more about the ways they can reduce their impact. As a start consider what you use regularly, are there things you use that could have a more sustainable alternative? Sometimes making the shift is cheaper and more fun while also helping the Earth!

For example: Using a Reusable water bottle, bringing your own coffee thermos, bringing a storage container for leftovers when you eat or carrying an extra tote bag for when you buy or find something on the go. There are many easy ways you can help out and it’s not about being perfect, every effort counts!

EarthHub.TV will be sharing some more ways we choose to live more sustainably so follow us on Instagram, find us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube channel to learn more. As the #earthhubtrashchallenge grows we are so excited to see all the amazing things the community does and continues to do to combat trash.
